Week 65: Wiesbaden Visit

Another crazy week has flown by. Brooklyn reached a big milestone and got her braces taken off! Ryan’s going to be getting his put on soon, but for now, we have a break from orthodontist visits. Besides that excitement, Brooklyn has been staying busy with babysitting and dog sitting. Ryan’s good friend from down the street is finally back from his visit to the States and they have been catching up on missed Xbox hours. 😂

Saturday, we drove up to Wiesbaden to visit with our friends, Ray and Susan. We headed to Rüdesheim for the day, which is a cute town on the Rhine River; really popular as a river cruise stop as well as for its wine. We had lunch, then started the Rüdesheim Ring, which is the ‘big’ thing to do there. The first part is a cable car ride up the ridge, over the vineyards and overlooking the Rhine.

Once you get to the top, you hike across to the ridge to a chairlift that takes you down. The hike takes you past two monuments, a castle ruin, and on a trail through the woods

We took a small detour on our hike through the woods but eventually found our way out. At the end of the trail was a biergarten so we stopped for some drinks and water before going on.

A shady Biergarten is always a welcome sight after a hike.

After our break, we headed back down the gorge via ski lift chair. The chair lift took us over more vineyards and into the town of Aßmanhausen.

We walked through Aßmanhausen on the way to catch our boat ride. The town itself was adorable and could be its own standalone destination; we plan to be back. We made it to the boat just in time and took the forty minute boat ride back to Rüdesheim.

When we got back to Wiesbaden, we rode the bus downtown for the Wiesbaden Weindorf. Weindorf means ‘Wine Village’ and it’s a festival where local wineries bring their wines downtown to be sampled. Since it’s a fest, of course there’s the usual German fest food, and music.

The Weindorf is in the square around the Wiesbaden Cathedral.

We sampled quite a few wines and ended the night with a stop in a tiny pub.

Smallest pub in Wiesbaden, it only had 2 tables.

Sunday, we headed back home. School is starting for Matt this week and for the kids, next week so we have a lot of preparing to do. Thursday, we leave for our last summer trip to Malta!
