Week 157: Eye Surgery #3

This is going to be a super quick post! I had my next eye surgery on Friday, and spent the remainder of the weekend in bed, in the dark. I’m pretty behind in posting updates because I’ve been trying to avoid looking at screens as much as possible, and when I do, I’m using an eye patch. When I look back on this week, I took hardly any pictures to back up the things that we DID do before the surgery. 🤣

The Stuttgart Reds Baseball field

Softball season is getting close to wrapping up but Brooklyn still had lots of games to play. On Wednesday night, the Stuttgart High team scrimmaged against the local minor league team, the Stuttgart Reds. The Reds were short some players so Brooklyn and two other Stuttgart High players were given to the Reds for the game.

The competition was not evenly matched as the Reds were just way better on all levels, but they are a semi-professional team. At the end of the game, the coach asked Brooklyn if she would consider trying out. Brooklyn was super excited to be asked and I think it’s something we will pursue after the High School season is over. They have a junior baseball team as well, so we may try and get Ryan involved in that since we’ll already be there.

Dusk from the Stuttgart hills.

Brooklyn and Ryan both had games on Saturday. Sadly, Ryan’s game was cancelled again due to flooded fields. It has been raining so much lately and we are so sad that half of his games were cancelled this season and never rescheduled.

Brooklyn played a double header in Wiesbaden where the team added two more wins to their record. Matt and I weren’t able to come do to my eye surgery but a professional photographer has been following the team this season, so we got a couple of shots of her in action.

Thursday night’s sunset

It has been thunderstorming on and off all week. We are mostly happy about that though because it’s washed the final bits of pollen away and given us some beautiful sunsets, like the above.

Friday afternoon was my eye surgery. I went in to have my left eye’s lens re-opened and scraped clear of epithelial ingrowth, a procedure called a debridement.

However, when the doctor opened my lens, she said she found the underside to be “shriveled up.” The cause of the haze in my vision was due to this, and not ingrowth. What caused this? Who knows! The flap may have closed incorrectly during the last round of lasik, due to the rip that occurred. Or, it maybe have been because of heavy eye strain too soon after surgery (computers, phones, etc). Or, maybe I accidentally rubbed my eye too hard before the flap was fully closed. We will never know!

The good news, is that ingrowth has a high probably of coming back, so now I hopefully don’t have to worry so much about a recurrence. The bad news is that the fix for wrinkles was some “stretching and trimming.” She warned me it was going to be a painful weekend ahead and snuck some surgerical-grade anesthetic drops into my pocket as I was walking out.

Sure enough, it was the most painful thing I can remember; maybe my mind is not accurately remembering past surgical recoveries, but this was really bad!

I revisited the doctor on Saturday and she told me everything looked good but I still could not see anything out of the left eye because it was so swollen. She gave me some more anesthetic eyedrops and said to keep resting it. I will still have a contact lens bandage on it for a week.

I spent the rest of the weekend lying around in the dark, which is a shame since it ended up being such beautiful weather, of course! I did finish three audio books and got caught up on rest, and by Sunday evening, the pain was starting to ease.
