Week 227: September Continues!

We’ve flown through another beautiful week here in Germany. The weather has continued to be sunny and in the low 70s. I don’t know how we’ve been so lucky to have a month of almost perfect weather, but I’m sure that means we’ll have to pay for it double later. We were so busy with work and school all week that by the time Friday evening came around, we just wanted to stay home instead of trying to find something to do. By Saturday morning, though, we were well rested!

Matt started his Saturday by getting up early and playing golf with friends. He finished in time to come home, pick me up along with some of my friends, and take us up into the vineyards of Untertürkheim. This weekend was the Wein Safari—one of my favorite Stuttgart events in September.

For 20 euros, you’re given a wine glass and a “passport,” then you embark on a short hike, stopping at five different stations to sample five glasses of wine. Each station is hosted by a different local winery, each serving a delicious accompanying snack.

We had a fantastic day hopping from stand to stand. It was incredibly hot, though—temperatures soared above 90°F with very little shade. The festival was packed, too, probably because rain was forecast for Sunday, so I think everyone wanted to soak up the sunshine. Instead of lingering at the last station like we usually do, we packed it in early.

Next, we headed to the Paulaner Biergarten, where we met up with some friends for dinner and drinks. By then, the temperature had cooled off, making it the perfect way to wind down and close out the day.

Just like last week, by Sunday we were completely wiped out, so we spent the day lounging around the house. The weather took an abrupt turn—from the 90s the day before to the low 50s and rain. Thank goodness, because that meant I didn’t have to wrestle with my usual guilt when looking out the window on a sunny day. With just about one week of September left, the freeze on travel and annual leave for Matt and me is almost over. We’ve enjoyed taking it easy, but I’m definitely looking forward to getting back out there for more travel and adventure soon!
